I never owned a Moog but had free access to a Sonic 6 or Micromoog when in late HS, early college.
The first synth I ever owned was a Korg MS-20, which was a terrific copycat of the Minimoog.
It was around $250 cheaper. Had identical patch bay, essentially the same knobs.
Later minis had a hard sync switch that mine didn't have, but it was just one patch cord, so no big deal.
And, I'm with you on that Switched On stuff.

Man, that had to be tons of work in those days!

school. I also found a used Roland SH-101. Still have them both. You're right about the amount of work patching a giant Moog. I can't imagine. The MS-20 was a nice compromise.

There's actually a reference to me on an iMDB page for a producer (pretty nice list of credits) who was a guitar student of mine.
It says that his interest in the tech side of music began when his guitar teacher gave him an MS20 after buying an Oberheim OB-8.
It doesn't mention me by name, but it's definitely referring to me.
Several years after that, given his success, he got hold of me and sent me $500. At that time, the thing was 20 years old!
I'm glad for his success!
