I always loved this song, but this video with the glum white hippie backing band and the exuberant black doo-wop vocalists/dancers is bananas!
Id love to know more is this the band that was on the record? Or did the record company hire the hippie dudes for the video to get crossover sales?

Not a big hit I'll grant, but he's my home town guy.
3 Top 40 hits man!
It's practically a career!
EDITED FOR A CORRECTION
Like a rock peaked at 37 on the Billboard Hot 100
It peaked at 7 on the Top 40 Rock Tracks list in 1982

(64,995 posts)I bought the album. Rest of the disk was "me'h". But the hit was great.
Also, Ides of March had 3 other Top 100 hits in the 60s & early 70s.
Vehicle made it to #2, so a different class, but not sure they were a true one hit wonder.
My wife & i know Jim P from Ides, later Survivor.
I also know Frank, who cowrote the big Survivor hits with Jim, and Dave, the original lead singer.
We (me & a musician buddy) were in the studio with them while they recorded " Somewhere in America".
Jim made a TON of money doing the Sunkist orange soda commercials with the take on Good Vibrations.
He's a very shrewd business guy, in the music industry.
Their first deal for Survivor was even better than the Police got!

(19,193 posts)Anyone know what their other "big hit" was?

(12,154 posts)I had the single of this when it came out. A kid I knew was the son of a record promoter, and he gave me this gem among others.
Itchycoo Park is wonderful, too, and I assume is the other hit youre thinking of.
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun
Great rock poetry. Wordsworth, eat your heart out!
I'm also partial to Lazy Sunday. Fantastic Wurlitzer electric piano (and Hammond organ) by Ian McLagan. And this video is so fun:

(19,193 posts)'Tin Soldier' for P.P. Arnold (The beautiful woman singing backup in the video) but decided he liked it too much so they recorded it. The drummer for Small Faces, Kenny Jones, replaced Keith Moon in 'The Who' after his untimely death. They were all "Mods" in the 60s together (see Quadrophenia).
I lived on the shores of Lake Ontario in New York, and in my teens we'd listen to CHUM FM Toronto because it skipped over the water nicely at night. They had all the latest British imports, which U.S. stations would hardly ever play. I had wonderful exposure to 'The British Invasion' long before they hit the U.S. markets. I also got to see The Beatles at Maple Leaf Gardens when I was 13. What a wonderful time to be young and alive in that era!

(12,154 posts)The distortion in the bass (or rhythm guitar?) part for Spirit in the Sky is epic. Sounds like they used all the amps for Led Zeppelin and The Who in one massive stack and then then recorded it at 11.

(15,265 posts)The fools were a Boston party band that actually cut some records and got a lot of air play in Boston in the late 70's early 80's. They even opened for bands like Van Halen. "A Night For Beautiful Girls" was probably their biggest hit.

I only found out it was a cover a couple of years ago. What a goddamn great song.
