Mom would have been about 21 then so she was referring to her parents' generation. She said a lot of the lyrics went over her head at the time (not unlike what the Andrew Sisters claimed).

I've had the song in mind for a long time, for good reasons: I remember entertainer Morey Amsterdam, and I was born in '45, so clearly my parents were part of the generation. (I'm celebrating my mother's 106th birth anniversary next weekend.)
