(810 posts)I think that might be the greatest run of albums by any band ever. My favorite of those four varies for entirely arbitrary reasons.
Shine on You Crazy Diamond is a beautiful, haunting song. Both Parts I - V and VI - IX are so complex (in my, not a musician, view).
I've been listening to The Floyd since 1972. Someone put Umma Gumma on the turntable. Astronomy Dominee came on and I instantly fell in love. Rarely a week goes by where I don't listen to one or two Floyd albums, start to finish -which is really the only way to truly appreciate a lot of their albums. And after 40+ years and hundreds of listens I still sometimes notice new things in these masterpieces.
I owe Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason big time. )I'm also rather passionate about Clare Torry's incredible vocals on Great Gig in the Sky.)

(23,094 posts)Friend played Picts, Careful with That Axe Eugene for me in late 1969/early 1970 and I have been ensconsed on the Pink Floyd train ever since. One of the highlights of my long life was seeing the debut of Dark Side of the Moon at one of the closing days of the Filmore. My, oh, my - what a magical experience. I love their complexity and brilliance and deep understanding of the ways of the mind. Comfortably Numb has been my one of my top songs for so long, it so encapsulates the perils of addiction to an addictive personality world. There isn't a week goes by that I don't listen to some Floyd tune or the other - they have a fabulously extensive list of great and pertienent songs, always done with such verve.

(810 posts)I'm not a big concert guy.
Someone introduced me to Careful with That Axe, Eugene when we were in a very illegal state of mind. Scared the hell outta me for a couple of seconds. Then we all laughed at me. Good times.
Animals is a testament to the prescience of both Orwell and Waters. It's unbelievably relevant to our times: "Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream." Damn, that's a good line!
