(19,186 posts)I grew up on the Blues, Soul and Motown in general. Why would a lily white boy from northern New York listen to that music in the 50s and 60s?
It's what I liked. I felt like Steve Martin in "The Jerk" when I was a kid. And that music is just so damned great!

(41,103 posts)in MD. The music back then had such terrific vibes and talent, for people all around. After soul, I got into the Doors and Hendrix, we'd blast music from the basement den. Our rough & tough dad was so good natured about it, teased me about 'Light My Fire' cuz I played it so much.
A friend of my sister, a bit wild in nature drove a GTO and wanted us to go to Balto. to see Hendrix. That would have been mind blowing, but dad said no. In hindsight that was the safe choice. Those were the days!

(19,186 posts)was them doing covers of American Bluesmen. The Beatles, The Stones, The Animals, Long John Baldry, The Who and on, and on, and on....they all copied Black American Blues singers.
Black American Blues was much more popular in the U.K. than the U.S. But there was never any systemic racism in the U.S. Just ask any republican.

(16,850 posts)I never hear it without thinking of my Dad and watching "The Blues Brothers" movie. "Soothe Me Baby", another great Sam and Dave tune, is playing in their car when their pulled over by the cops early in the movie, and "Hold on I'm coming" plays immediately afterwards as the enter the infamous mall chase scene. That movie single handedly opened my world to R&B and the blues.
