and a great recording! Five stars all the way.

This was such a stellar original, the Beatles didn’t even try to put their own stamp on it. As much as I appreciate the Lads from Liverpool, this is one case where they probably should have left well enough alone — although things being as they were at the time, a white band’s cover was generally the only way for songs originating as “race records” to reach larger audiences. Too bad Alexander’s recording is so obscure.

He would have turned 82 in May had he not died tragically young.
