A little more than half the remaining teams have come into Nome, and I haven't missed one. No sleep at all Tuesday night and maybe six hours last night, in two parts. I'm hanging in, though, and the night shooting is working out pretty well. It seems like a lot of people are arriving in the wee hours. Thanks, guys. . We had two this morning around 4:00, one at 6:00 and I'm waiting for the next one around 7:30. The wind is howling, but it's warmed up to around 17 so not too uncomfortable.
I'm pretty happy with my shots. I think you'll like them.

(28,756 posts)the iditarod is the only sport i follow. it must be so exciting to be right there. i'm an "ultimate insider" and have been coming home from work every day and checking out the race. i'm still worried about newton marshall's lost dog!

(46,436 posts)She had traveled the 150 miles to home. Newton is here in Nome, but I think they've picked May up down there. Gerry Willowmitzer also had a dog get away, but it's fine. He had to scratch from the race. I'll see if I can find the details on May for you.
Ed. Here you go, the report from the Anchorage Daily News
Update, 10:30 a.m. Thursday:
May the sled dog devoured a hot, hearty serving of canned salmon and kibble stew on Wednesday night, her first real meal since getting loose from her team six days earlier in the 41st Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
May, a strawberry blonde female, probably traveled 300 to 400 miles over some of the most rugged country Alaska serves up, said Stan Smith, the Chugiak man who is giving love and temporary shelter to May.
"She traveled several times from Rohn to Nikolai, all the way up the Dalzell Gorge, up the Alaska Range to the other side, through Rainy Pass, across Shell Lake, she was spotted multiple times in Skwentna," Smith said.
"So many reports of seeing her. They were all heading south.
"It's an incredible journey."
Smith, who raced in the 1993 and 1994 Iditarods, said May was captured Wednesday evening by snowmachiners near Big Lake.
May got loose from musher Newton Marshall's team between Rohn and Nikolai last Friday.
On Wedneday, she traveled down the Yenta River, headed south, to Willow, to trails she had run before, maybe even, eventually, to Lanier's kennel in Chugiak.
"She was headed home," Smith said.
Except she missed the turn to Willow, where the Iditarod began on March 3. There's a maze of trails in that part of the valley, and May wound up on Trail 11, which leads to Big Lake.
"She was less than a mile from Martin Buser's kennel," Smith said.

May says, "Hey, you didn't ask ME if I wanted to go to Nome."

(28,756 posts)i actually called the nuimber and talked to a guy i guess it was last saturday or sunday. i told him i was frustrated at the lack of news. i was really thinking she would perish. but he told me they knew where she was but she was just too skittish to catch.
how many years have you been doing this blue? this is my second year signing up to be an insider so i can watch all the video. i think it really is the last great race, though i suppose the quest is too?

(46,436 posts)but have only been coming to Nome since 2009. We were just going to come out here one time for the experience, but we've had so much fun, we just keep on coming. It's kind of like a family reunion by now since so many people come year after year. We stay at the Nugget Inn, which is right at the finish line and we get the same room every year. The Vietnamese family who own the hotel treat us like old friends.
If you ever get a chance, you should try to come up. Being such a fan, you would have a wonderful time.

(28,756 posts)so tell me, as i'm watching the mushers come into the finish line, am i hearing you and your family cheering?

(46,436 posts)If you're watching the Insider, you might see me under the arch with a pink down coat and a camera in front of my face. After the top teams come through, security is more lax, so I just go right in there like I own the place and take my shots.
We're expecting about eight teams in tonight before midnight. I might actually get some sleep since there's a pretty big gap after that.

(28,756 posts)thank you. i'm really glad she made it. the guy on the phone said she'll come when she gets hungry enough and it looks like that's just what happened. she was just tired and hungry.

(28,756 posts)did the insider people go home? there aren't any new videos up on the site even though there are still mushers racing.
a dog died. one of paige drobny's, in unalakleet. they couldn't get it out in time because of wind. so sad.
are you still in nome for the late finishers or does it all just kinda wind up with the first 40 or so?
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)They might have been able to save it if they had been able to fly out. The wind came up really strong yesterday, and flying in the regional plane was impossible. Paige seems very sweet; I'm sure she's devastated.
A lot of people have left, but we stay until the end. Today we had Mike Williams, Sr., and Gerry Souza come in. We're waiting for Louie Ambrose in an hour or so and then we're looking for Angie Taggart tonight around 11 p.m. After that, there are only six left, two coming in around 6 or 7 in the morning, another three hours after that, and the last three probably tomorrow night or Sunday morning.
Tomorrow afternoon they have "meet the mushers" where you can get autographs and so on. We ordinarily don't go to that, but this year we're getting a poster signed for some folks from Maine we met out here a couple years ago who are giving it as a prize. Their dog club had everyone guess the top 10 finishers and whoever comes closest will get the print with the autographs. It's a really beautiful picture signed by Jon Van Zyle, the artist.
Sunday is the mushers' banquet, which is an amazing feast catered by the Millennium Hotel in Anchorage. They hand out the awards, and each musher gets to say a few words about their journey. It goes on for hours with all the tales from the trail and is a lot of fun. If there are any straggling mushers who don't get in before Sunday night, on Monday they have the red lantern banquet, which is essentially whatever is left over from Sunday's feast. Best leftovers you'll ever eat.
.
We're staying out here until Wednesday. I always like to take photos around town after all the excitement because this is such a unique place. Then it's home to sort out the thousands of pictures.
Here's a link to the poster. The colors are brighter in person. ... Oh, wow, i didn't expect that to copy.

(28,756 posts)i'll be here checking in on the web page to watch what i can. i think i may have seen you in one of the videos! no way to know for sure. i'm glad you're having such a great time up there. what a feat, over 1000 miles in the alaska wilderness. those dogs are amazing.
eta to add i have great respect for the mushers and what they endure as well.

(46,436 posts)She has pink snow pants, as well. Mine are black. We're up early this morning to meet the Brazilian, Luan Ramos, who should be here in about a half hour. The Russian with the gorgeous dogs will be here around 10 a.m. That's 2 p.m. your time.

(28,756 posts)and there was definitely a pink coat with a camera passing in the background as he was talking about his father in law! lol i don't know why but it just tickles me that you're there.
i hope they'll be posting Luan's finish but i don't think they've covered them all. which is actually quite a disappointment to me. they have the live webcam up but no sound on it and i'm not that familiar to where i know who's who. i really like the interviews and the videos of the dogs a lot. i am just kind of in love with those dogs. they're incredible.
this year even more than last i can see the demeanor of the dogs at the finish compared with the start. they are tired and who can blame them.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)I think all of st. Michael must have been at the finish line with their signs. I'm very pleased with the pictures I got. I've got to hand it to the Native mushers...their families come out in force. There was a huge crowd for Mike Williams, Sr., too.
The only ones so far that I'm not totally satisfied with are Wade Marrs who came in a little sooner than I expected, right after someone else, while we were inside warming up. We were like, "hey, where did those dogs come from?" And went running outside. Then I forgot to remove my lens cap, so I just got him going away to the dog lot. The other ones that aren't up to my standards are the twins. I didn't realize that they had stopped turning on the floodlights and I didn't have my flash attachment on, so I had to use the on-camera flash which just wasn't adequate. It's ok, though. I got great shots of them last year. Can't win 'em all. I do have a couple of decent shots to post of them, I'm just not sure which is which because I can't see their bib numbers. They are very identical.
