So, are you gonna pay for Adobe's "Cloud"?

Say Goodbye to Creative Suite: Adobe CS Is Now Creative Cloud

At Adobe’s annual MAX conference today, the company announced a major overhaul of the ten-year-old Creative Suite, which will now be known as Creative Cloud. From now on, you won’t buy CS6 or CS7—you’ll buy a $50 per month subscription to CC (happily, the first year will only cost $30 for anyone with a CS3 or later serial number).

What’s the reasoning behind the overhaul? For one thing, an online subscription service could help Adobe curb piracy. For another, it’ll make it easier for customers to opt-in to new product releases throughout the year, rather than dropping a single giant update annually. But more generally, the shift shows Adobe focusing on the way the cloud is integrated with its products. Rather than logging into Creative Cloud to download updates, a newly redesigned app will push CC notifications directly to your desktop—making it easier to update your programs and download new apps.

For photoshop users...a Creative Cloud single-app membership is available at a special introductory price of $9.99 per month (with an annual commitment) for our loyal customers who currently own Photoshop CS3, CS4, CS5 or CS6. Offer available until July 31st, 2013

FYI, current versions of PhotoShop (CSx) will work forever, you just won't get to upgrade without a cloud subscription.

they have been since photoshop 7 even though i have upgraded to CS3. as long as I have one computer with a compatible version of windows, i'm as good as gold.

plus the video was spot on. "sure it's only $50 a month now ... what will it be 5 years from now? $500?"

plus i'm really not enthused about cloud computing ... we all know how that worked out for the folks on battlestar galactica

I have figured out ways to do without Adobe. Plenty of photo apps. I'm checking out iDraw and I figure I can use Pages for page layout. Also, I'll keep CS4 on one computer and use it as long as it works.

Screw Adobe.

As as web front-end developer, I can't pay for software that isn't available if I don't have an Internet connection. Sometimes, when I travel, I don't have wi-fi and if I don't have wi-fi and I cloud compute, I can't work.

Plus, I pay for the software all at once and if I don't want to upgrade, I won't be forced to.

I think this is their way to combat piracy and I think they're going to lose customers over it.

How it works. You don't need to be constantly connected to use Creative Cloud, you simply download the full copy of the software to your computer and you only actually need to be connected once every 3 months for validation.

Adobe has essentially shutoff sales of Photoshop to thousands of amateur photographers. Now is the time to upgrade to CS6 and standby and watch how this experiment works out. I do 95% of my photo processing in Lightroom and what I need from Photoshop is in CS6. I can clearly wait it out. My other question is what are photo students going to do?

Aside from Lightroom, amateurs always have Photoshop Elements, which is more than enough for them but if they want the full blown Photoshop, Adobe has single app pricing at $19.99 a month.

As far as photography students are concerned Adobe has always had student pricing and Creative Cloud is no different.

There are a couple of features I like about Photoshop better than GIMP, but for my personal use I can't justify the cost of Photoshop. I was starting to think that I might look into purchasing Photoshop soon, but this latest development took care of that silly notion. GIMP will fill my needs just fine.
