Related: About this forumAttention: October photo contest
Hi,
After taking a few days to think, I've chosen a theme for the next contest. As far as I can tell, it hasn't been done previously and hopefully nobody objects too strongly. If it's ok, I'll post a submissions thread on Oct 4. That gives everyone about 3 weeks to prepare and take pictures.
Theme: Tell me a story...
Some ideas for subject: Storytelling. Books (old-school print and electronic forms allowed). Reading at libraries, bookstores, cafes, etc. Capture a scene that calls to mind your favourite book, or recreate a scene using your friends or pipe-cleaners and marshmallows. Be creative. Have fun. And good luck.

Storytelling goes back to before there was writing...

(22,380 posts)I believe I'd like a little more guidance, dear Hostess. I'm kind of stumped on grasping the breadth of the assignment.
Does the photo show the story as it happens - beginning and end? Or a transitional photo that says: here is some part of some fascinating happening?
Or is it really about reading. And books, and the enjoyment of stories contained therein.
No, I'm not taking pain killers
Just being dense, I suppose.

(10,525 posts)So, no, you are not dense, dear Mira. Sorry if what I wrote was not clear.
"Or is it really about reading. And books, and the enjoyment of stories contained therein." - I didn't want to restrict it just to books (written tradition). What I had in mind was a theme that portrays or references both oral and written storytelling. As you say, the enjoyment of the stories, both hearing and telling.
Let me try to explain further. It can be as simple as a photo of a book. A photo of someone telling a story to a group of children. A photo of a monk playing Angry Birds and titled War and Peace, would be by referencing and playing with elements of literature. Anything that ties into storytelling in some way.
It is intentionally open-ended, to allow you to interpret it as you wish. There is no wrong way to do it. You're interpretation can be as literal or symbolic as you want. As simple, or as complex as you choose to make it.
I don't know if that makes it any clearer. Hopefully so?

(22,380 posts)I actually came up with an idea, as I read your explanation. Plus I wish I could re-run the photo I tried to get votes on in the contest: "Americana"
though it did not find a wide audience. I must say
Thank you Tindalos.
This will be extremely interesting.

(18,624 posts)I imagine something will come to me, but on first blush I'm perplexed.
Those are often the best contests as it opens the field to a diverse range of interpretation.
Congratulations on Purple & Green.

(27,439 posts)Are you wanting photos along the lines of photo journalism, photos that have a narrative and suggest a story?
The first thing I thought of was the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson.

But maybe I am reading this wrong. I may be totally confused.

(31,382 posts)I had saved quite a few of the significant stuffed animals--mostly bears--from my boys' childhood.
Every year, when they were little, I would buy a different Christmas story book. After they'd outgrown
reading to them, I used to set up a display at Christmas with the books and the bears. It was really
cute.
If I still had them, I could have set it up to photograph for this contest. But all that stuff was destroyed
in the fire.
This is a photo hubby took of me one year setting up the display in the house that burned.

Can anyone figure out why--on photobucket I have cropped and resized this photo--but when I copy/paste the link for the altered photo on here, it doesn't show up that way. Any thoughts why? Ok. Figured it out. Saved the altered photo to my computer and then uploaded it again to photobucket. Now it works.

(31 posts)I can't wait for too long. I am very curious about it. What should I have to do to join it. It will be a decent opportunity for all of us to show our photography skills. Looking forward to it.

(10,525 posts)Sorry for the lack of response. I'm extremely busy week with work and haven't been home or online much. I will post the contest submission thread tomorrow and respond to any questions, probably in the afternoon/evening (Pacific time).
