Sunset at zero degrees

This time of year, the sun sets far to the south, so my usual sunset-viewing spot is compromised by the airport and hills and trees that lie in that direction (unlike the expanse of water which you see in my spring and fall sunset shots). But since it's close, I like to go down to the Point in the winter anyway and shoot back towards the city and the mountains. Kind of reverse sunset.

This is how it looked this afternoon. I couldn't stay out long because it was very cold but the alpenglow is worth coming out for.

I knew you had some mountains there, but not like these!

(Just kidding.)

I've just been using my little "nifty 50," probably the cheapest lens I have, lately because it's so lightweight and small. It does a good job.

I think I could take the cold, but the darkness would be depressing.

which is actually in southern Alaska, or Southcentral, more precisely. We still get daylight here, even in the dead of winter when the sun rises around 10:15 or so and sets around 3:30. Right now I'm thinking "Only 21 more days until the days start getting longer." .

The great thing about winter, though, is that with the sun so low in the sky, we have "golden hour" all day. I love the light this time of year and the pastels.

but if I'm going to be out for any length of time, I take a couple extras and keep them in my inside coat pocket. The 1Ds has a big battery that I often forget to check because it lasts so long. When I'm out all day, like for the Iditarod, I'll carry an extra battery, but I usually won't need it.
