had rained most of the day, and after 4:00, sky began to 'clear,' leaving opportunity for clouds and setting sun to do their thing.

Oh, to have nice sunsets this time of year....

With all these shots sloping to the left, it suggests that you are being a bit too forceful with the shutter release button. You might try rolling your finger front-to-back (if you tend to keep your finger straight) or gently curl it into the button.
