(81,856 posts)I have no idea, though it's too expensive for me.

(50,555 posts)I'm also trying to figure out who'll buy this. Sports photographers have almost all gone to Canon because at one time Canon had the fastest AF, and by the time Nikon caught up the press shooters all had $25,000 worth of glass that won't fit on a Nikon. They brag about how this thing shoots HD video like a champ, but seriously guys? If you need to shoot stills AND video you can get a pro still camera and a pro full-HD camera for less than the price of this one Nikon.

(26,044 posts)To be honest, the D4's price isn't such a shock, considering that, when I first started Raven Falls, the standard for landscape photography was a Hasselblad or Mamiya medium-format SLR fitted with a digital back. The prices on those ran from around $25,000 to $33,000, body-only. And the resolution was no better (and sometimes worse) than that found on today's top-end DSLRs
Of course, I couldn't afford one of those back then, and I couldn't afford one now, either. I've been quite happy with my A77 for the past two-plus years. 24MP and excellent video performance are all I really need, and those only cost $2,000 or so to be first off the production line. Until this camera wears out, it would take an almost unimaginable increase in capabilities to get me to "upgrade" even in the Sony system, let alone go to the expense of migrating to a different platform.

(11,518 posts)Not that I'll ever remotely consider spending anywhere near that on a camera, but Canon's 1DX has been out for a while at a list price of $6799. For someone who depends on the best possible gear to make a living that's not so crazy.

(10,136 posts)I would love to have one, but I cannot swing the $6500 price tag. The other option is Canon's 1DX at $6800 or so. Which one you buy will depend on which lens system you are already invested in.

11 frames per second
iso max of 400,000
if your a sports photographer, especially one shooting indoors i can see the need to spend the coin on it especially if its your profession since then it could be tax deductable.
for a typical shooter... not so much

(4,741 posts)The 800mm f/5.6 VR. Granted, the only real use I can think of for that chunk is shooting surfers from the cliffs. The more useful 70-200 is "only" $2400...but then you'll need the 24-70 for $1900, and the 14-24 for $2,000 (gotta cover every possible length if you're a pro)....and a $650 50/1.2 for shooting handheld under starlight, maybe a nice $800 105mm macro, $1300 defocus/soft-focus lens if you do portraits, a nice $2000 tilt-shift lens for architecture and landscapes. Then you'll need accessories...a flash for sure, $600 or so, a grand for a tripod, gigantic CF card, maybe strobes if you do studio stuff. And the speed - this Bad-Ass Mofo will snap 11 pictures a second if you hold the button down...for twenty seconds nonstop. 220 shots. When you do sports, that extra few fps and buffer can literally make your money.
In all seriousness, like Major Nikon said, the body is small change in the grand scheme of things. I've seen guys at major events with two, three, four bodies; it's worth the extra $12K to them to have different lenses covering all conceivable conditions for the day mounted and ready.
Oh, check this guy out if you really want to lose it...$42,995 body-only. And Hasselblad lenses make Nikon look like Holga. In quality as well as price
