Related: About this forumSome images from my last few explorations
The last couple of weeks have seen me travel hundreds of miles, in search of the elusive abandonment goodness. Here are a smattering from the last few weekends.
Coal breaker in Pennsylvania
This is the last standing inactive coal breaker on the eastern side of PA (I believe). Many of the surrounding buildings have already been demolished.
Three Mile Island at dusk
I'm pretty sure I saw glowing things but I'm sure it was just my imagination.
A salvage yard in Pennsylvania
This is a salvage yard that seems to have no real purpose at this point other than being horribly photogenic.
Abandoned house on Maryland's Eastern Shore
This house had several love letter's that were interesting to read through. I didn't get to capture images of them though.
An abandoned church on Maryland's Eastern Shore
The last images I saw of this made it seem more church-like. Except for the pews you see in the second image, there isn't much left.
Another abandoned house on Maryland's Eastern Shore
This house reminded me of someone walking out for bread and milk and never coming back. It was definitely abandoned though because the door was hanging off the hinges, wasps had taken over and there was black mold starting to form in some spots (as well as some structural issues).
Next weekend I'll be heading back to the last intact silk mill in the US (near the PA border in MD, the following weekend sees me on Saturday in Johnstown, PA and the following Sunday near Richmond, VA--both around 3 hour one-way trips). Thankfully I have the first weekend in May off but the following weekend I'll by in NYC for 4 days.
I need a vacation from my adventures but I'm loving every minute of it. Hope you enjoy the photos.

The abandoned portrait is sad and I want to know more about the family. Wonderful photo.
Also the "Raymond" photo - work shirt on one side - dress shirt and ties on the other....another one that tells a story....and makes me want to know more.
Wonderful series!!!

(20,886 posts)Apparently we're too new out here on the left coast. Not many abandoned buildings. We used to have an abandoned cement plant, but it is now a housing development. I have some slides of it somewhere. There are a few ghost wineries, but most have been reclaimed as wineries or remodeled as houses.
I love the scenes you present. Keep 'em coming.

(18,219 posts)with the things that are left behind. It always has such a sad quality to it. I was glad to hear that the church was pretty much cleaned out, because all the personal things just wasting away are disturbing, although they do draw me in.

(724 posts)Looks like Asbestos tile on the building. Along with Coal dust, what would get you first?

(14,040 posts)and lead paint. Those are the main reasons they're abandoned and haven't been torn down. Remediation is expensive so the owners let the buildings sit and rot and, I would imagine, hope for a happy arsonist to come along and take care of their problem for them.
However, I think my smoking is going to get me first.

(356 posts)was wondering if you ever went to Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe) PA to shoot? It's my fathers hometown. It's an old coal town and filled with interesting historic buildings.

(14,040 posts)I've not been there. I love historic buildings but if they aren't falling apart I'm generally not interested in photographing them.
I don't want to think about the psychology of it all but something about abandoned buildings speak to my soul and inner creative muse. I'm sure a therapist could have a field day with that.

(14,559 posts)important. Cataloging the things you do and doing it with the sensitivity and care that come through is a vital part of our recent history as a country and a people.
I hope you have a book in mind and that a publisher will recognize the value in what you are doing.
