Love these photos, and yes, #3 is beautiful. But my favorite is the last one.

It allows you to use a larger aperture if you want to limit depth of field. Alternately, it allows you to use a longer shutter speed if you want to use blur to suggest motion, as I did in these photos. The filters used in most of these shots reduce ambient light by 9 stops. This allowed me to extend exposures up to 30 seconds in a few cases, despite the fact that the subject was mostly under full, late morning sun.

I've gotten to the point that I use the camera's 10 second self-timer rather than a cable release. Since I use mirror lockup for long exposures, with a cable release I'd be counting to 10 anyways waiting for the mirror slap to settle down (a little obsessive but...)
