Went to Coit Tower a couple days ago. The view from the top over San Francisco is great, but the artwork inside the tower itself is both historic and impressive. The interior walls are covered with murals created by artists during the Great Depression as part of the Public Works of Art Project, one program in FDR's New Deal.
This is a segment of a much larger mural by Maxine Albro, Agriculture in California.

(19,459 posts)I was trying to pull a smaller composition out of a much larger work. I love the colors of this artist's palette!

(18,219 posts)I always have trouble getting a photo of a painting. Always get glare. You got this shot beautifully.

(60,010 posts)and you got a great shot of it.
We have a WPA painting of horse drawn wheat harvest on the Post Office wall down here.
Of course, Coit Tower illustrations are so much bigger.
Very cool to see.

The rotunda of the Oregon state capitol also has some very large murals of this type, larger than those in Coit Tower. I've seen this style referred to as Social Realism. Products of the time in which they were created, I suppose.

(19,459 posts)Haven't crossed paths with you for quite awhile. I think the last time was in a thread when that whacko, Breivik, shot all those kids on that island in Norway.
Glad to see you are still here, and hopefully doing well.

Much larger figures than in Coit Tower. The same type of Social Realism, but with northwestern themes.

(3,599 posts)I love the murals in Coit Tower.
There are some pretty ones at the Beach Chalet (on the Great Highway) that are interesting.

(19,459 posts)Thanks for the compliment. I love The City, and we visit fairly often since it's only about 30+ miles away.
It must be fun to live there.
