(20,886 posts)But I have to say that is a rather strange mosaic.

(7,380 posts)I believe it's intended to be humorous. The whole scene depicts children racing in bird drawn chariots!

These mosaics were very hard to photograph well, which is a shame, because they are really astonishing.
Here are some more:

(7,380 posts)It's still plenty warm, even for swimming, and there aren't hordes of tourists.
Springtime would be a good time as well, I imagine.

(7,380 posts)though there must be a few exceptions............
We had quite a shock early in our trip. While staying in Ortigia, which is the old town of Syracuse, somebody blew up some cars very close to ours during the night. Ours was protected from the heat by a white van.

(42,770 posts)your heritage - or just a whim? Been to Italy - mainland (except for Capri). What is life like there?

(7,380 posts)Even though economically it's not in very good shape and a lot of things are frayed around the edges, it's a beautiful place with a wonderfully rich history. Of course I visited it as a tourist, so my experience is somewhat superficial. I do know quite a few Italians who have chosen to live elsewhere because of its dysfunctionality, both economically and politically, so it must not be easy. But as a visitor who is fascinated by its history and culture, and loves the mediterranean climate, I think it's wonderful.
A Sicilian Greek coin from Syracuse ca. 400BC, depicting Arethusa:
