and from what I understand, there are several places in Vienna where Mozart lived
after he left Salzburg. Hubby went to the Mozart museum in Vienna--I passed--
and we went to the house in Salzburg where he was born and grew up. The other
house/museum in Salzburg was undergoing renovations and closed.

BUT, we discovered the little cottage where he wrote the Magic Flute had been moved
to Salzburg and was sitting on the grounds of the Mozarteum University of Salzburg.
Hubby talked his way in--having written a scholarly paper on The Magic Flute many
years ago--and he got to go out on the grounds--not open to the public--and see
the cottage.

Here he is, in front of the cottage in which Mozart wrote The Magic Flute. He talks about that day
as one of the high points of our trip last year.

137. that's a good area for wineries
Tue Nov 4, 2014, 01:47 AM
Nov 2014

The whole west side of the Willamette, going into the Coast Range foothills, is where most of the wineries are. The soil and climate is really conducive to producing a top quality pinot noir there. The Newberg/Dundee area has a ton of vineyards. This is the Shaffer Winery, about 20 miles northwest of Dundee, in the Forest Grove area. I don't know if it's related to the Shaffer Vineyards in Napa...This is my favorite one to go to, it's on a hill in a little valley and the tasting room has an old lodge quality to it, and it has a large Christmas shop in it.

Each year, the day after Thanksgiving, all the wineries have an open house with wine tasting...I've gone, off and on, with a group of friends for about twenty years now. In the beginning, wine tasting was free! But now they charge $5-10 to sample. But you can get good deals if you buy it by the case. I'm not that much a wine drinker, but my friends are!

I've gone through Amity before, it's near McMinnville. The countryside there is beautiful, rolling hills and farmland, lots of oaks, nice temperate climate...

First photo is the restaurant after hours (I know how to beg forgiveness and rarely ask permission) looking up to the hotel's facades, the second is one of many similarly funny facade shots of the hotel.
