However, webbed feet seems to indicate that you have an aquatic turtle. So rather than being kept in a box it may be better to keep him in an aquarium configured so that he can get in the water to swim around, and get out to sun himself. My wife has two turtles that look similar and that's how we keep them. They have gotten pretty good sized over the years, so we have them in a very large tank with plexiglass ramps they can use to sun themselves under a heat lamp.

because they can pull their limbs completely inside of their shells due to a hatch they can seal.

It has nothing to do with keeping them in a box.

This particular fellow is Terrapene carolina major, and due to the rains got washed up on the driveway.

Are you going to keep him, or let him go back whence he came?

get cooled down after being trapped on pavement. I put him far away from the cement and into a nice pile of juicy leaf litter .

We've destroyed a substantial portion of their environment as humans, and turtles are weirdly set in their way. I guess that is what happens when you live 100 years.

He or she is the future of their colony. If I can make it easier for the poor turtle, I'm happy with my decision.

and let it go. Also, if it is a boxie, it is not a water turtle so it is good that you know what you have. I am raising two baby Eastern Box Turtles that will be released when the weather warms up---we call it headstarting, getting them to a size where they are safer from predators.

We've had horrible weather and flooding. It's nice to, for once, give back to our critter neighbors instead of working against them.

I was just interested in capturing the little dear baby I rescued. I am notoriously bad with photos. You got my foot instead of my thumb this time LOL!
