Related: About this forumPicked up a Nikon D7100. Couple of photos.
I've been using a Nikon D40x since I bought it new in 2007. Finally got around to upgrading and picked up a factory refurbished D7100 for a pretty good price. Couldn't justify the cost differential for a 7200 just to get a little more buffer. The moon was taken last night, and the roses were taken just now. Both were done with my Nikkor 70-200 2.8, and neither photo had any post processing. Lot to learn on this new rig, but I'm very pleased so far!

(19,370 posts)The D40x was my first DSLR and between the sports shots I did for my kids through HS and the nature shoots that I love doing, I took tens of thousands of shots with the camera and learned a lot using it. The D7100 is not quite a "pro" camera, but I think it has enough capability to help me grow as a photographer.

(130,865 posts)Got a 'flat' moon last night, and just bought a rose bush I'm hoping to shoot after it blooms, and you're encouraging me, someday, to upgrade camera, from samsung galaxy to some Nikon that will help me work on photo skills. May have to wait til next year for that.

(19,370 posts)Can't wait to see your roses and look for deals on a Nikon, there are a lot of good ones for entry and intermediate level cameras!

(130,865 posts)HAD a great one, not a D, just a regular, gift from folks many years ago, used it well, became damaged somehow + then house sold, camera 'disappeared.' Had wide angle + telephoto lenses + the 'regular,' so will want to replace with a D. A friend might sell me hers, if her she receives a 'substitute' as a gift. Fingers crossed!
My rose MAY look something like these, mine isn't blooming yet, but it's Mr. Lincoln. Very fragrant.

(19,370 posts)Just set everything on "auto" starting out and worked my way up from there. You'll have an advantage though as you have past experience with film and know about shutter and aperture settings. Won't take you long to get up to speed on a DSLR!
That's a gorgeous rose, can't wait to see yours in bloom!
