(19,459 posts)Spring growth, clear skies, and temps in the low 80's. Driving through the Gold Country, heading toward old Highway 49 and the diggin's.

(19,459 posts)Have you driven 178 to Lake Isabella? Last week I drove down to Redlands for the Redlands Bicycle Classic stage race, and I took a detour at Bakersfield to drive 178 up to Lake Isabella, over to 395, and then down to the 15.
The drive on 178 through the Kern River Canyon was just incredibly gorgeous, although the road through the canyon is just about as narrow and dangerous as they get, wedged between the river and canyon wall as it is. I couldn't find a place to get off of the road to take any photos, which was pretty frustrating.

(15,805 posts)when the kids were young. Haven't gone back in years, but it was a very scenic area and we enjoyed getting away from the monotonous desert views.
Willow Springs started off as a rest station for stagecoaches and mule-drawn freight wagons and there are still some ruins. Now the road is a popular shortcut between the Antelope Valley and Tehachapi that that bypasses the 14 and the 58, west of Rosamond, but probably only the locals know about it as its kinda off the beaten path.
Anyway, its a nice scenic drive in the spring when everything is new and green and the big oak trees are leafed out. The long, twisting road through the rolling hills looks very much like your photo.

(19,459 posts)And realized that I've driven past the general area many times, taking the 58 to 14 route, or the 138 through Neenach and on down the 14-18-138 to the 15/215. I'll be going down again soon, and next time I'll detour into Willow Springs and look for those ruins.
That network of roads provides a much needed break after five hours on I-5, and avoids the nightmare that begins down around Santa Clarita.
I once made a mistake in timing on a drive to San Diego, and reached Santa Clarita just as the evening commute was starting. It took me over three hours to go from Santa Clarita to Irvine, in that wonderful traffic.
What a nightmare.
