Nothing about it seems particularly adapted to survival, but boy are those males gorgeous.

nephew owns a business repairing/replacing transmissions in large equipment. Vehicles are lined up in the lot to be repaired. When one of the guys has to go out and get the vehicle/bulldozer, etc. into the shop they have to wait until a neighbor's errant peacock is not around. The peacock attacks the guys while they are trying to get into the vehicles - like really attacks!

Years ago the female wandered into his shop area so the male peacock jumped the fence for love. Female is gone but the male continues to guard the vehicles.
It's a problem.

I can't for the life of me think of where, but this discussion jogged a faint recollection of it. It was because of that loud cry they make when monitoring their territory against intruders.

sometimes the guys have to use their cell phone because they are stuck in the trucks with the peacock waiting for them to get out too.

I think it actually adds to the workers' day - everyone gets a laugh.

Once my nephew had a dispute with a crow - bad idea. The metal roof of the workshop was bombarded with rocks from the whole crow gang for a summer. He knows now - never make eye contact with a crow unless you are putting food out.

I worked with a guy who had a couple of peacocks, and he said they were as good as any watch dog he'd ever had.

We were at a wedding in the Sierra foothills at the beginning of summer. Petey was strut'n his stuff all over the place.
