Yellow Crowned Night Heron with his lunch

watched this guy for 15 minutes trying to eat this. Had to leave so i dont know if he was able to gulp it down

1. Great photo. Used to live near a river and watched big Grey Herons stand motionless for hours before

catching a trout. But never got a photo.

I especially love the second one, where he's tossing the fish in hopes of getting it into a better position for swallowing!

3. I love night herons

They're not shy at all. They often kept me company back in my pier fishing days.

4. I watched one for a half hour or so. There was also a large Blue Heron on the scene

that would wait for the Night Heron to catch something and take it from him. After awhile the Night would catch something and immediately fly to within 6 feet of me to eat it so the Blue wouldn't take it from him.

5. Great blue herons are voracious.

They'll scarf down rodents, ducks and anything else they can catch. The same goes for great egrets. They're some of my favorite subjects.

6. theres an ergret rookery near me that i shot last night.

havent had a chance to edit the photos yet since today is head to ren faire day like i do every weekend this time of year
