Those are the leaves of the Jacaranda, and I don't think they're evergreen.

I love the tree's colors too, and I'm so lucky to have this right outside my study, where I can see it all day!

this year's freak freeze here in Corpus Christi has knocked it back to sprouts from the mostly dead trunk. Ah well, what's another 5 years or so!

I am pleased to hear that it's coming back. It will take some time, as you say.
Hopefully there won't be any more of that abnormally cold weather in Texas!
