I shot these today at Point Vicente Lighthouse, where we stopped last summer.
(I edited this to add the shots of the blimp).

(86,307 posts)I used to see them a lot at one of my parks jobs. It's good that they are repopulating.

(3,149 posts)Photographing the peregrine falcons is a real bucket list item for me. I hope to do a lot more of it this year. Aren't they amazing to watch. Their speed and demeanor are amazing. They will chase off birds that are four times their size.

(86,307 posts)Near a work station and sometimes when I was giving a talk about a totally different species, one would come over and hover above me like in your photo. I would stop my talk and point out to my audience what a rare gift they had by seeing this great bird right overhead, then I would tell them about these speed demons on wings.
I would love to get photos of a few.

(3,149 posts)I'll point you in the right direction if you ever come to town. The bonus is some amazing ocean views as well. I was pinching myself today taking photos of falcons and whales at the same time.

(86,307 posts)Don't know when I'll ever get back down that way. We have them here, I just haven't been out much with my camera lately.

(149,514 posts)These are just wonderful! The peregrine falcon and the whale shots are amazing. But all of them are great.
Thank you so much for these.
What a sweetheart you are!

(3,149 posts)I was in heaven!
(Also, I located the restrooms there, but they were locked. LOL!)

(149,514 posts)And how nice the sun was out! Next time, I'll take my jacket and then you'll get the smile you wanted.
Too bad about the restrooms. What's up with that?

(3,149 posts)The park was fairly crowded today. I can't imagine why they would lock the restrooms. Maybe it was a Covid thing.

(54,268 posts)Although as far as whales are concerned, on Cape Cod, all you need is a cheap Sony and a boat to get a cool pic or two:

(54,268 posts)It's a marine sanctuary near Boston where whales feed in the summer when they come down from the arctic. They aren't shy, just hungry, and they don't care who knows it.

Then again, SOME things are best observed from VERY far away:

(51,502 posts)The Point Vicente Lighthouse is a lovely spot, even if you don't luck out like that. I live a little way down the coast in Seal Beach, and have visited Point Vicente Lighthouse many times, but I've never seen a whale from those cliffs.

(3,149 posts)I went to Point Vicente looking for the falcons. The whales were a bonus. I had forgotten what a great whale watching location it is. There were volunteer spotters with telescopes on duty counting the whales and other marine mammals.

(3,149 posts)I started the day off at a different, supposedly more reliable, location for shooting falcons. Unfortunately, I pretty much got skunked at that location. After two hours of nothing, I decided to stop here and try one more time before going home. That proved to be a wide decision. It's just like fishing. If you don't catch fish in one place, try someplace else!
