MSNBC is giving Rachel Maddow summer Fridays off and airing a newly refashioned version of field-reported magazine show On Assignment hosted by veteran foreign correspondent Richard Engel.
On Assignment with Richard Engel is being billed in on-air promos as a special series. It is slated to premiere at 9 PM on Friday, July 7.
Maddows show has surged in the ratings this year, finishing the second quarter as the most-watched cable news show in the key news demo. The host was out sick for two weeks about a month ago but has since returned. For the network, giving Engel top billing on Friday nights both rewards a valued and pedigreed NBC personality and also ensures that one of its biggest stars (Maddow) gets plenty of rest heading into the fall.

I'll miss Rachel on Fridays but I do like Richard Engel so I guess I'll live.

(16,730 posts)Lawrence started out 4 days per week, as did Brian Williams with the 11th Hour with Fridays off. But because of the constant Breaking News, Fridays have become an important night to keep these shows on.
Rachel Maddow is a rising star because she makes the time for her team to research the facts to present for her segments. Unlie the folks at FOX, Rachel comes off as educated, reasonable, and real. She has a PhD in Politial Science from Oxford University, in England. Yes, she is also a Rhodes Scholar. Something the other chanels do not have.
Richard Engel is not too shabby himself. A well deserved spot for him for sure.
