(18,639 posts)And not what I was expecting for the finale. Well, some was. Some wasn't.
Behind the Aegis
(53,952 posts)We watched it from day 1. There were a few issues here and there, but overall, I loved the series. But, I was pissed at the ending. It now falls into the group of shows which I will never see the ending again.

(103,856 posts)It's too bad they did not end it during the Lithgow era.. This was a rather weak final season..
MuseRider
(34,105 posts)until the end. Can't say more, too early I will wait until everyone has had a chance to see it and soak it all in.

(21,754 posts)I knew about 4 or 5 episodes into this season that they were not going to go the way I would have liked so... I've been dis-appointed for weeks However... This episode was a real quality episode... Perhaps the best one since John Lithgow's season. They did a better job then most shows with wrapping things up though it definitely could have been more satisfying. The writing was really pretty top notch for all they had to get done, I wish the last few seasons had been as good. I thought the very minimal Dexter narration gave a lot more power to a lot of it. Not what I wanted but better then I had feared.

(22,340 posts)And I have a real problem with the very end, but I'll save that for later when it won't be spoiler-y.
Ohio Joe
(21,754 posts)I'm not posting any of it here as there are major spoilers for anyone who has not watched yet but a very interesting alternative:

Behind the Aegis
(53,952 posts)I am still pissed, but that alternative, I would have likely hurled something at the TV.
catchnrelease
(1,945 posts)I think that would have been WAY worse. I have mixed feelings about the ending but I definitely don't hate it as much as some people apparently do.
I don't think there was any ending that would have made everyone happy. Let's face it there were only a limited number of ways to wrap it up--Dexter escapes, Dexter is killed, or Dexter gets caught and waits to be executed. Of course there are various ways that those events could come about, but in the end I think some people wanted him to escape and live on, others wanted him to die one way or the other. So how could it ever be resolved with the majority of the audience satisfied?
I did feel like quite many of the things/events in the last couple of shows were too contrived, but I can get past that (I am rooting for a serial killer after-all!), and I'm ok with the ending.
I tried to keep my comments here vague, but if anyone thinks it's too 'spoiler-y' please reply and I'll edit or delete.
Goblinmonger
(22,340 posts)That's worse.
MuseRider
(34,105 posts)because I would have liked that better.
I can't say more without spoilers so I will leave it at that. I don't know when the time is right that we can talk about it but until then I will be on the side of what could have been.
All in all a really well done series that we enjoyed start to finish.
BainsBane
(53,031 posts)It made a certain amount of sense. I was starting to think what others are implying about the very end, but in a way it makes sense given the trajectory he's gone through over the past couple of seasons.
Iggo
(47,550 posts)The absolute worst episode of a crappy, phoned-in season.
That series deserved better.
Goblinmonger
(22,340 posts)Like I said above, I get the ending at a thematic level. I really do. I wasn't happy with it for a lot of reasons but I get it. But it just feels like the series deserved better. That's a great phrase on your part. It deserved the kind of ending that gets talked about for decades as being awesome and it didn't get that. It deserved the kind of ending it looks like Breaking Bad is getting.

(102,230 posts)I guess all the rumours about a spin-off (that I thought was going to revolve around Dexter's sister) influenced the decision to keep Dexter alive--just in case? I thought the finale was pretty lame, but I would probably watch a spin-off or movie that focused on Dexter's new life (as a lumberjack? LOL) But, that is mainly because I like the actor--every since Six Feet Under.
BainsBane
(53,031 posts)It has no where to go.

(448 posts)What really pisses me off is I live in l.a. And have friends who are writers and they do anything to get to write on a show. I can't believe the producers, michael c hall, etc accepted this total crap. This last season was beyond horrible. I can't believe they brought Hannah back...like we're supposed to be rooting for them???!!!
BainsBane
(53,031 posts)I liked this relationship with Hannah. I mean, the guy is a serial killer. He's no going to get along with someone normal. I didn't love the final episode but I don't have the same reaction others here do. I also was glad to see Dexter develop a greater sense of humanity and compassion this final season.

"There are a bunch of different ways to do it. I hope that whatever we do will feel both original and in keeping with what people expect out of 'Dexter,' " Showtime entertainment president David Nevins tells THR.
..snip...
"We spend a lot of time talking about how we keep the show alive, so it may be a more complicated original idea than just a spinoff," Nevins said of the potential follow-up, which likely would come from Dexter showrunner Scott Buck, who recently inked a two-year development deal with the network.

(562 posts)I think the problem with the show is that it ran on too long, no matter what was going to happen the plot was going to get boring and redundant.

(3,746 posts)I really liked the Vogel character. Unfortunately the last half was rather tortured, especially the annoying Hannah sub-plot.
BUT! I did like the epilogue; suggests to me that the 'amiable' Dexter was also metaphorically dumped at sea, and now The Dark Passenger is in the driving seat. Nice and bleak.
