(68,644 posts)I mean I don't think such a young person could be there otherwise.
But this suggests to me that more than one adult was negligent.
Damn.

(17,857 posts)I learned to fire a 22 single shot rifle at an earlier age. My dad stepped me up from an air rifle. I would like to know what she was firing. The family was on vacation, and this was not her regular instructor (if she even had instruction before this). I cannot imagine her shooting a handgun or any other gun which wasn't a single shot or a bolt action.
What I hate most about marketing to children are the stocks like make real guns look like toys (and of course toy guns that look like real guns).

(3,818 posts)BUT! our uncles, fathers, and grandfather would beat our asses if we even thought of pointing it at anyone! We would shoot outside toward the burn barrel and always had to have an adult around before we could shoot. I think around 12 y/o we no longer had to do that.
Air rifles are strong as crap. My son found this out when we handed down the rifle to him.
It is bad instruction/parenting, whatever, that would have a child confused over if it is real or not and to point anything toward anybody, no matter.

(17,857 posts)I think air rifles are great. I still have the one my dad gave me as a kid, and I have instructed both my daughters with its use (they have not fired any other gun). I gave my brother my single shot .22 and single shot 20 gauge that my dad gave me when I was a kid because he lives on an acreage and can more easily use it with his boys.
My dad would have beat me silly if I ever pointed any gun at another person - no matter what the circumstances. I have taught my daughters the same thing. One logical step up in rural environment is a single shot pellet gun (6), multi-shot BB gun (8), .22 single shot (10), 20 gauge single shot (12), .22 semi auto or bolt action (14), 12 gauge single or double barrel (can't think of a conceivable reason why you should have a semi-auto shotgun) (16), and bolt action deer rifle (16-18). That was my dad's plan until we moved away from the farm. My dad never got past the .22 semi auto which was his gun that he allowed me to fire. I would be responsible for cleaning and storing the guns after use. I was probably around 12 when I used the BB gun and air rifle unsupervised in the backyard in our home in Orange County - we got a neighbor that complained and that stopped even though we were very responsible with its use (we had 6 foot high brick walls surrounding us on three sides).

(17,857 posts)God how can people be so stupid. Who the hell gives a Uzi to a child???????? Probably a child with no prior training in firearms safety. When I was 17 I fired an M16 on full auto and the sucker walked on me, and I had been shooting guns for 12 years before that.
