Does anyone know what happened to 1480? Their home page says they are no longer broadcasting. I did a brief internet search but can't find a link to explain why they are gone.

(131 posts)And it just said they are no longer broadcasting. That's a drag if true. It's always been in trouble when it was the flagship station for Air America, then Nova M. Then they let Jeff Farias go, who was the heart and soul and they had billboards all over the valley in 2008. Then Nova M got in trouble and the station went off for a bit in 2009, then they came back until now. I hope it comes back. Why don't liberial or wealthy progressives support progressive talk the way the wealthy conservatives and corporations support conservative talk. Why aren't Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Spielberg etc donating money, and I am sure there are progressive corporations that could sponsor.

(6,204 posts)Back when Phoenix had Air America (1310 I think) I do remember Phoenix Florist was one of the local sponsors and a couple of small businesses over on the west side of town.
I got the same message when I went to their website earlier in the day. It is frustrating when there is not an explanation given for going off the air.

(1,242 posts)I remember when it returned they programmed sports content from late morning into the afternoon. I spoke to someone close to me and they were concerned about the sports blocks, that they were not politically informative, etc. I told this person that the station was most likely trying blocks of content (sports) that could bring in ad revenues that were not available for political talk in order to keep the remaining political talk on the air.
If you want to find out more about what is going on with the station or to urge others to help finance airtime, the FCC website should have ownership information. Many of the remaining independently owned radio stations have ownership and programming stories which are all easily understandable, much like family sagas. I believe there is interest in bringing it back. It has always come back. Maybe there needs to be a non profit formed which can solicit to other groups in the valley, like voting rights, campaigns (Sinema?) which are willing to partner for publicity. The interruption in 2009 happened after a large presidential election year, like 2017. This prospective non profit could also serve as a way for wealthy progressives to donate without going directly to the station. The local office rule was or is being changed, so the change in rule might be the source of the interruption in broadcast. Hartmann and Stephanie Miller are the mainstays of the content, and are obviously nationally syndicated, which under the change in the office rule may be broadcast cheaper in the valley from a different source. Going off the air temporarily may be required. I wish I knew where to send at least messages of support for local progressive content.
Peace through strength only works when it actually keeps the peace - 2 decades of war build up is not peace or strength. It is waste.
