Prescott fire engulfs Whiskey Row businesses

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2012/05/08/20120508prescott-fire-whiskey-row-businesses-abrk.html

Flames engulfed at least three businesses Tuesday evening along Prescott's historic Whiskey Row.

Photos sent to The Republic and 12 News staff show billowing smoke and fire coming from the
rooftops of the Bird Cage Saloon, Pearl's Place Cafe, and Prescott Food Store.

"There's a huge plume of smoke pouring out of the (Prescott Food Store)," Bob Hoskovec, a
Prescott resident, told The Republic about 7:15 p.m. while standing on the steps of the downtown
Prescott City Court building, directly across from the fire. "The firefighters just moved back."

He said at least 12 fire trucks and dozens of firefighters - possibly including Chino Valley and
Prescott Valley crews - responded to the fire and their equipment occupied the entire city block.

Didn't this also happen a century ago?

The Big Fire of 1900. There are a few plaques around town commemorating the event.

There was also a "cowboy" poet, Gardner I think, who wrote of starting at the Kaintuck bar and 40 drinks later ending up at the Depot. I don't think there are that many now but in the 70' and 80's when I 1st started wintering down here there was plenty of "pub crawling" to be had.

I still keep a place up there but with kids, grandkids and other assorted hangers on using it, plus the wife and I doing some "doctoring" at the Mayo we don't get up there as much anymore.

I'm sure whatever happened they'll get rebuilt real soon.
