Grand Canyon conserving water after pipeline breaks
The National Park Service has begun water conservation measures on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park effective immediately until water pipelines have been repaired, according to a news release.
Rockslides from the late-May weather caused a new break to the North Rim water pipeline for the sixth time this year. The poor weather has made reaching the rupture location difficult, meaning crews will be unable to begin repairing the pipeline until Saturday, May 25.
According to the release, the pipeline is located on the side of a steep cliff and require helicopter support, fall-protection equipment and other required safety materials must be utilized for work crew safety. It is unclear if workers will discover more ruptures while doing their repairs.
The water provides potable water from Roaring Springs within the canyon to seasonal facilities open from May into November.
