Casino is coming to Pine Bluff

A casino gambling expansion approved by voters in November seems likely to become a reality a good deal faster than medical marijuana.

See the meeting Tuesday in Hot Springs, provided by an ad agency for the coming Quapaw casino in Jefferson County.

Marijana went on sale in Hot Springs yesterday about 30 months after voter approval.

John Berrey, leader of the Quapaws, has told the Pine Bluff Commercial he hopes the casino will be open by Valentine’s Day 2020. The tribe submitted its application to the state Racing Commission when the permit process opened May 1. The commission hasn’t made a decision yet, but the Quapaws are the only applicants so far in Jefferson County and have approval from local officials as the constitutional amendment requires. Controversy surrounds the future of casino gambling in Pope County, also authorized for a new casino, along with the legalization of existing casinos in West Memphis and Hot Springs.
