Hey, Phillips 66. Want some California cheese with your California whine? Re: Oil bomb trains.

Poor Phillips 66 refinery, only running at half capacity since the Refugio Beach oil spill in Santa Barbara County.

People lined the walls of the Pismo Beach City Council chambers Tuesday night in advance of a presentation about a proposed Phillips 66 Co. rail project that would bring up to 250 trains carrying crude oil through the county each year.

Gary McKible, a representative of Mesa Refinery Watch Group, led a presentation explaining why the advocacy group opposes the proposed project.

Phillips 66 has said oil production in California is dropping, and additional sources of crude oil are needed. The new project would allow the company to serve growing demand and add local jobs, they say. Phillips 66 has also said the project is necessary to keeping the refinery open.

The plans have drawn criticism from residents throughout the county and beyond, who claim that transporting crude oil via train is unsafe because of its volatility as well as the potential for derailments and explosions.

Fellow DUer emsimon33 and I attended that meeting. What wasn't mentioned in the article was why the refinery is operating at half capacity. It seems the pipeline they were supposed to maintain has been closed for inspection since it's the same pipeline that spilled onto Refugio State beach and which mess is still not cleaned up. It seems that Phillips 66 had found a way to stop state inspections on the pipeline and neglected maintenance in the past on the same pipeline now closed for inspection.

So now in order to make up for the reduced production, they want to import Alberta tar sands in trains to the refinery so they don't have to close down and reduce jobs. Poor, poor Phillips 66. I had to play my tiny violin for them.

Their representatives at the meeting told so many lies that at one point the room did a group groan and the mayor had to scold us to remain civil, but it wasn't a rude groan just one that we all gasped in unison when a blatant lie was told. It also seems they are lying about closing the refinery and if in the end they do have to do that, all I can say is, THEY SHOULD HAVE MAINTAINED THOSE PIPELINES.

To be continued as this debate goes on to the San Luis Obispo Planning Commission, The California Coastal Commission and the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors. Santa Clara County has rejected the proposition and we are next.

To all Californians, we don't want this and if we can get them not to do this in our county, they will try to bull doze this through in other ways like transporting over highways or through other counties. We must stay united in fighting these oil companies who want our communities to take on high risks for their profits and we never see any relief at the gas pump for it. Gas is approximately $3.50 a gallon still in my community.

But you are told to remain civil. Like that line in bullworth about obscenities, and how him saying fuck on tv is nothing compared to what's going on in the world.

Also Vallero refinery is trying to do the same thing in Benicia, so it will be interesting to see how it all goes down.
