Former California Republican Party Chairman Duf Sundheim on Wednesday will enter the 2016 race for the U.S. Senate seat Democrat Barbara Boxer will vacate.
Sundheim joins another former state GOP chairman, Tom Del Beccaro, of Lafayette, and Assemblyman Rocky Cha´vez, R-Oceanside, as the prominent Republicans facing off against the two major Democratic candidates -- Attorney General Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Santa Ana -- in California's first open-seat Senate race since 1992. All candidates will compete against each other in June's primary, with the two top vote-getters advancing to November regardless of party....
Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a University of Southern California political expert, doesn't see Sundheim changing the race's dynamics.
"It looks to me that whoever the Republicans field -- unless it's a massive star -- the arithmetic says the runoff will be between two Democrats," she said. "Where is Duf going to get the kind of money he needs to become visible?"
