Napa doctor admits to owing millions in taxes

A Napa doctor pleaded guilty to tax evasion in U.S. District Court on Thursday after overstating his business expenses for seven years, saving him millions in taxes, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Dr. John Compagno, 70, was charged with one count of tax evasion on Nov. 16 following an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service. Although he pleaded guilty to knowingly and willfully filing false 2010 corporate tax return with the IRS, Compagno acknowledged in his plea agreement he owes more than $5.4 million in unpaid taxes, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Compagno didn’t respond to messages left at his administrative office in Hercules on Thursday.

Compagno is the owner and operator of three corporations located in Hercules in Contra Costa County – John Compagno, M.D., Inc., West Coast Pathology Laboratory, Inc., and Histopathology Reference Laboratory, Inc. He has been practicing medicine since 1971 and pathology since 1974, according the West Coast Pathology Laboratories’ website.
