State confirms botulism toxin found in Northern California gas station nacho cheese
SACRAMENTO — The state health department has confirmed reports of one dead and nine more sickened from a botulism outbreak associated found in nacho cheese sauce at a gas station in Walnut Grove.
Cheese sauce bought at Valley Oak Food and Fuel gas station in Walnut Grove tested positive for the toxin that causes botulism. That toxin was also the same type identified in patients’ results that CDPH has received.
Inspection reports for the Valley Oaks Food and Fuel station show that on May 8, health officers from the state Department of Health impounded four bags of Gehls cheese sauce and reopened the store to sell prepackaged food items only.
“While there are still unanswered questions about this outbreak, these tragic illnesses are important reminders to be vigilant about food safety,” CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith wrote in a press release.
