California Democrats blast Trump's State of the Union address
As he began his State of the Union address, President Trump sounded a conciliatory note by suggesting he wanted to work with his opponents in Congress. But after nearly an hour and a half of the president attacking investigations into his administration, dialing up his rhetoric on immigration, and tearing into pro-choice legislation, California Democrats werent buying it.
Golden State leaders blasted Trumps address Tuesday night, calling it divisive and panning the presidents paeans to bipartisanship as insincere.
The president is once again using a national stage to push a divisive, xenophobic, anti-immigrant agenda, Oakland Rep. Barbara Lee said in a tweet. It wont work and we wont stand for it.
Speaking to an audience filled with far more Democrats than his previous addresses to Congress, Trump started his speech on a placatory tone. Together, we can break decades of political stalemate, he declared, pointing to issues like reforming the countrys criminal justice system, funding infrastructure improvements and lowering drug prices.
