Richard Nixon's former Western White House in San Clemente has a new price: $57.5 million
The sprawling estate that was Richard Nixons presidential hideaway on the ocean in San Clemente has a new price tag: $57.5 million.
Dubbed the Western White House in Nixons era, the property was listed at $75 million in 2015, then went off the multiple listing service later that year. The home subsequently was priced at $69 million, and most recently at $63.5 million at the time it was taken off the market in December 2018.
Set behind private walls, the combined living space, including a main 9,000-square-foot main house and other structures, totals about 15,000 square feet. The stately home includes Nixons ocean-view office and an entertainers pavilion. The lush grounds sport a swimming pool and lighted tennis court. A catering facility, expansive lawns and a greenhouse also are part of the compound.
Nixon bought the estate on a secluded coastal bluff at the southern end of San Clemente in 1969. He called it La Casa Pacifica.
The propertys significance goes back for decades before that. Hamilton Cotton, a financial partner of San Clemente founder Ole Hanson, built the home in 1926. Cotton was a Democratic Party supporter who entertained President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the residence. As the story goes, the pair played poker there.
