(24,263 posts)I've been evacuated from my home twice for fires, once with five minutes notice. I was also living within 10 miles of the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Been through two power shutoffs. Since I'm retired, the power shutoffs are a minor inconvenience after we got a small generator. I feel badly for people living paycheck to paycheck who lose time from work when the power goes off. It does have a bad effect on the local economy and small businesses.

(2,615 posts)metaphorical boat. Retired and living in the foothills NE of Sacramento. I've only experienced one fire evac... so far. I invested in a generator to go along with all my camping gear. The only drawback is no TV news or internet when the power goes out.
I think for extended outages I'll just drive over to Reno for a mini vacation.

(22,893 posts)There you go-- Reno isn't so far-- at least they have power!
It's so eerie looking out the window at night when we have no power-- it's like looking into oblivion.

(24,263 posts)along with help at times from outside agencies for the exemplary job they have done in keeping things safe in our small towns and unincorporated areas in our county. There has been virtually zero crime related to the power outages or evacuations where I live. I live in a Senior Mobile Home park where some have medical conditions that make things extra difficult. Between the neighbors banding together, sharing generators, and cooking for those who can't, no one I know of has gone without having their basic needs provided. Also a shout out to Meals on Wheels who haven't missed a day of delivery when the power was out.
