Crews battled a massive fire that broke out Saturday morning at San Francisco’s Pier 45, KTLA sister station KRON reported.

The San Francisco Fire Department first reported the 1-alarm fire around 4:23 a.m.
The blaze quickly spread to a 4-alarm fire.

Crews responded to the area of Taylor and Jones Street and remain on scene at this time.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Officers report the fire caused a partial building collapse on the southern part of the pier, spread to two buildings on the pier and is in danger of spreading to a third, the Fire Department says.
There is no word yet of a cause.

Fireboat St. Francis was put in position to protect the historic SS Jeremiah O'Brien ship built during World War II, and it successfully saved the ship from damage, said Jonathan Baxter, the department's spokesman.

for the D-Day anniversary, with IIRC some of the original crew (or at least original Liberty Ship crew members), along with some young whippersnappers to help with the manual labor. The old-timers held their own, even in the engine rooms.

I'm glad it was saved: I think it's the only one still afloat. I've been on it when the engines were running: I can't imagine sailing across an ocean in it.

At the time I was there, I believe it was noted as one of two seaworthy Liberty Ship remaining. I don't recall exactly when I was there, but I'd guess it was in the early 90s. I was very interested in the radio room and the generators. A former Liberty Ship Merchant Mariner on board let me get a closer look at these areas. We discussed the homemade amplifier for the HF transmitter and the difficulties of paralleling DC generators under load. He convinced me to come back and wield a paint brush.

It was hard and dangerous work sailing those ships in WWII.

SS John W. Brown is the other operational Liberty Ship.
