Crews responded to the area of Taylor and Jones Street and remain on scene at this time.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.

There is no word yet of a cause.
Fireboat St. Francis was put in position to protect the historic SS Jeremiah O'Brien ship built during World War II, and it successfully saved the ship from damage, said Jonathan Baxter, the department's spokesman.

(10,129 posts)for the D-Day anniversary, with IIRC some of the original crew (or at least original Liberty Ship crew members), along with some young whippersnappers to help with the manual labor. The old-timers held their own, even in the engine rooms.
I'm glad it was saved: I think it's the only one still afloat. I've been on it when the engines were running: I can't imagine sailing across an ocean in it.

(17,420 posts)At the time I was there, I believe it was noted as one of two seaworthy Liberty Ship remaining. I don't recall exactly when I was there, but I'd guess it was in the early 90s. I was very interested in the radio room and the generators. A former Liberty Ship Merchant Mariner on board let me get a closer look at these areas. We discussed the homemade amplifier for the HF transmitter and the difficulties of paralleling DC generators under load. He convinced me to come back and wield a paint brush.
It was hard and dangerous work sailing those ships in WWII.
SS John W. Brown is the other operational Liberty Ship.
