Sonoma County sheriff criticizes county's health order, says he won't enforce it

San Francisco Chronicle / May 28, 2020

Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick said Thursday that he will stop enforcing the county’s shelter-in-place order on June 1 because he believes the past and current orders put “significant restrictions on our freedoms.”

In a Facebook post, Essick said the county’s initial and subsequent health orders since the start of the coronavirus pandemic have been “far more restrictive” than guidelines in neighboring counties and in statewide orders.

He said the county — which has reported 531 coronavirus cases and 4 deaths as of Thursday — has dramatically increased its testing capacity which he said has shown the infection rate is “under control and decreasing.” County officials have conducted 23,362 coronavirus tests, according to county data.

The sheriff's announcement came the same week that Sonoma County’s public health officer said she will hold off on allowing the reopening of some businesses because of a recent rise in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.

Also form the link: "... Santa Rosa police Chief Rainer Navarro said he will, “continue to support the Health Officer, who is the subject matter expert, leading a safe, strategic and data driven process for reopening.”

Such a disturbing trend ... politicians, law enforcement, private citizens, etc. usurping science and scientists because of their own moral righteousness.

This asshole -- a sheriff -- was specifically elected by people to promote safety and protect them from harm. I hope they kick him out of office.

your freedoms go bye bye during a pandemic for the simple reason that you do not have the freedom to spread a deadly plague. Your freedoms also go bye bye during war. They also go bye bye during a natural disaster. This pinhead sherriff needs to be arrested on public endangerment charges.

Let's see, what is a sheriff's job? To legislate? No.

My understanding is that the legislators enact laws that the sheriff is legally obliged to uphold and enforce. If such a law enforcer is unable to uphold that duty they they should be removed for not abiding by the terms and conditions. This is rebellion, not law enforcement. Neglecting your duty is no acceptable. A verbal protest is enough.

Otherwise, there either is no law, or you have petty tyrants making their own. It sets a very bad precedent. If they don't like the laws, they can quit in protest. Who do these people think they are? Are they promoting themselves?

... is that law enforcement officers have broad discretion to either enforce or not enforce a given law as they see fit. This has always been the case, afaik.

And many of their supporters accept that. The Bundy clan pushes that view and claim it is based on old English law.

Maybe all of that was true in old England but it's not true now.

We are true blue, 70% Vote for Democrats

We’ve had a masks indoors rule since April 17

And we’re doing it, with no trouble I’ve heard about

I’m not sure what the Sheriff expects to accomplish here

Off to do more reading, smdh 🤬

and I sometimes shop in Sonoma county. Not anymore, though. I have spent my last dime in that county until that Sheriff is removed from office.
