Wells are failing in southeastern Madera County. What to know about the water situation

On Sunday evening, a well motor failed in a Madera Ranchos community water system that serves around 1,000 homes.

Last week, another well pump stopped working in Parksdale, southeast of Madera.

Neither community has lost water service. Both are experiencing low pressure.

Madera County Public Works runs both water systems.

From Madera Acres to the Bonadelle Ranchos, private wells are running dry at an alarming rate. Self-Help Enterprises, an organization that supports communities with water challenges, has been tracking the problem.

I'm trying to visualize the abomination that is Las Vegas relying on desalinization.

Upstream users, including Las Vegas, will contribute to desalination plants for existing downstream users -- all the way from Los Angeles, to Phoenix, to Mexico.

This desalinated water will be too expensive for anything but indoor use but a certain amount of less expensive water will be available as recycled sewage and during increasingly rare wet years.

It would be insane to use natural gas to power the desalinization plants and to pump the desalinated water a thousand feet uphill since fossil fuels are the root cause of the problem.

3. Isn't this for Fresno, Ca.

Something that bugs me about water testing, especially from well water. I'm pretty sure that water in most municipal authorities is never tested for radiation, someone can correct me if I am wrong.

4. It's on my list of things to do when I invent a time machine -

- find whoever it is who thought building cities in deserts was a good idea and smack him or her upside the head.

Desalinization will certainly be necessary, but - and it's not a popular idea at all, but so be it - so will relocation. Some communities will simply not be sustainable.

I'm aware that, like so many other environmental issues, race and economic status will be factors here. These need to be borne in mind as we consider habitability in future development.

I'm glad Indiana is a Great Lakes State. We could build an aqueduct that dropped off Water in the Wabash River, the White River, and then all the way down to the Ohio River.

But not for a while.... It's been raining here for two days and for quite a few nights before.
