2. Not too many states

Have a recall process, especially as easy as California does. California between the ease of the propositions access, recalls, etc, show the downside of a direct democracy.

3. Most states don't allow for recall elections. Mine doesn't except in very limited circumstances.

That meant we were stuck with Tim Pawlenty, a folksier version of DeSantis, for eight years.

9. Fair enough! Plus there's midterms staggered with the Presidential election

I was asking as a Canadian, so I'm no expert on the matter by any means.

Probably best to put a pin in that balloon then.

To an outside observer the recall effort in CA seems nothing more than a slimy underhanded attempt by R's to gain more power at any cost.

14. I tend to agree.

Not only that but it looks like at the beginning of all this, a judge extended the deadline for collecting the signatures to initiate the recall by 4 months, ostensibly due to the pandemic.

Hope Newsom wins bigly.

5. recall electiobns

Twenty states allow for gubernatorial recall. Some states, such as Louisiana and Michigan, provide for the recall of any elected public officeholder, with the exception of judges of courts of record, in their state constitutions.[1] Some states only allow a recall vote to proceed for specific grounds. For instance, the Kansas Constitution allows the recall of local and state officials in an elected office, with the exception of judicial officers. However, the grounds for a recall are: conviction of a felony, misconduct in office, or failure to perform duties as prescribed by law

11. Thanks for the info!

Looks like the wikipedia article was off as it mentions 19 states. As I said to Hoyt, I'm an outside observer (Canadian) and the optics when it comes to the R side seem slimy and underhanded.

10. It gets old and if the Dems lose, kind of can be counter productive in the next election

Not to say that Abbott, DeSantis and Noem's behavior hasn't been crazy and not in most people's best interest but doubt that there is enough Dem support there to mount a successful recall in those states. At the point you get everyone all hot and bothered, you better make it a win or you look foolish in a special election.

Voters in that state ultimately gave him the boot in a more conventional manner.

17. They tried in Arizona with Ducey

Because of Covid they didnít have many people gathering signatures, and prioritized the Southeast Valley for their drive up signature gathering. And the organizers got upset whenever people asked about more options.
I would have loved to sign, but not if I had to drive an hour to do it during my work day.

20. Totally understandable

Seems the general consensus from the replies is that it would be a bad idea anyway.

The whole concept of a recall is totally foreign to this Canadian, as are the ramifications of it.

23. R's have no scruples wasting taxpayer dollars on recalls unless there are significant issues.

D's aren't nearly as purely partisan posturing prone (PPPP)
such as just name-calling an R "fascist" then basing an entire recall on an echo-chamber media frenzy stirring without substantiation.
The petition form I read by the partisan hacks contained no substantiated complaints. Just labeling Newsom as a "socialist", "failure" to i instantaneously solve public health problems the R's exacerbated, then point blame that the D didn't solve it all overnight. Whining about the lockdowns, despite it's largely agreed necessity and compliance.
Dem's aren't prone to just play mudslinging games with expensive processes... yet the R is supposed to be the "fiscally responsible" party? Things that make ya' go, HMMM.

24. Indeed!

I would think the process would run in the millions, maybe hundreds of millions.
Also seems like there's a low threshold for recalls in CA.

It's all so very foreign & different to this Canadian, as are the ramifications.

25. But look for the opening

I think the timing might be good in TX and FL.

If nothing else, the recall will bloody them up (politically) and weaken any attempted run for the WH.
