Newsom used DeSantis to win California recall. Does it mean anything in Florida?

“Don’t DeSantis my California” became a rallying cry for Democrats, but it’s unclear what the results mean for 2022.

As the California recall campaign intensified in July, Democratic operatives peered at the written responses to their latest survey asking voters about Gov. Gavin Newsom’s handling of the pandemic.

One word kept popping up among those who supported the Democratic leader: “Florida.”

The Sunshine State’s deadly summer battle with the coronavirus Delta variant, it turned out, would help galvanize California Democrats. In the months that followed, Newsom and his Democratic allies turned Gov. Ron DeSantis into an unofficial opponent. They linked the Republicans on the ballot to DeSantis’ hands-off approach to the public health crisis and doubled down on vaccine and mask mandates that Florida’s governor has opposed.

“Don’t DeSantis my California,” became a rallying cry that sparked Internet memes and campaign signs.

“What was happening in Florida, in Texas, was leading the national news every day,” a senior adviser to Newsom’s anti-recall campaign, Nathan Click, told the Tampa Bay Times. “It provided a very clear contrast.”

“Don’t DeSantis my California?” Did anyone in California hear this "rallying cry" during the runup to the recall? I never did.

Newsom was fairly popular. this may not transfer to purple to red states and especially not to state and local races where repubs do much better every year

Based on what I’ve been told. That’s why they have to rely on voter suppression.

because Elder was not a strong candidate. Newsom also had the "benefit" of the pandemic which allowed for those household checks. He is popular as a result.

I was annoyed with some particular midwestern newbies to the neighborhood, who brought some rigid door-to-door religious crusade with them. One of the kids I knew was particularly disturbed to find out the beach we went body surfing at was clothing-optional, went and sat at the parking lot offended all afternoon.
On the ride back I told him it's best that when you come to the west coast to pack up your pre-conceived notions and stuffy attitudes in a bag and leave it back where you came from.
Some time later this same person figured out that to body surf in the turbulent top of the wave, good luck keeping anything on, and figured out it wasn't the "immoral" idiocy he first thought. He ended up going home in a towel.
It was the late 70's. I sported a mullet.
That beach is now polluted beyond all belief. The religious ilk came in hoardes, and passed that torrid Prop Hate. I mean 8. Luckily it got overturned.

Abbott with the US SC decision greatly helped as well as DeSantis and the rest of the "I don't care" from crew.

Overall, sane Californians don't want to be like shithole.

Truth is, there was no need for a rallying cry. Ds outnumber Rs 47% to 24% in CA, and we weren’t about to let the Rs steal the governorship. Ds didn’t need to feel inspired to vote against the recall. Voting “no” was more like a chore you do without thinking about it, like taking out the trash.
