Hey fellow southern Californians...have you ever experienced anything like this?
January and February are suppose to be our rainiest months.
I have lived here 50+ years and can't remember a drier January.
Wow.

Things have seemed off for almost two years though. Not very cold in the winter and not really hot in the summer. This is the second winter we have not had to use the heat and there was only one week that required AC. Hope we get some rain soon!

(90,061 posts)I've seen it dry like this, this is hardly the first dry Winter, we had a couple rain-years in the low one-digits back in the 90s IIRC, and the last couple years have been wet, so we were due for some dry.
I like the 80 degree New Years Days we get now and then for the Rose Parade.
I do see effects in my garden though, things start growing earlier than they once did.

Didn't think before deciding what to do
Ooh, that talk of opportunities
TV breaks and movies
Rang true
Sure rang true
Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But girl don't they warn ya
It pours, man it pours

(90,061 posts)I have seen warm Januarys before, after all that is one of the reasons all these people moved here, but the most recent one was more consistent than any I can remember. OTOH, right now it's cold and drizzly and I am concerned that my courageous pepper is going to have a hard time. It might be partly my fault, since I been working the ground and composting, and that can perk them up, and that particular pepper started late last year and never did produce anything, so it might have been hot to trot.
Last year was weird anyway, because there were very few honey bees, so I had healthy flowering plants with not much fruit. This year there seem to be plenty of bees again. Some other people I discussed that with suggested it might be an after effect of burning half the San Gabriel Range and then two wet Winters, it taking a year or two for enough new growth to support a normal bee population.
