http://peoplesworld.org/i-am-san-francisco-city-college-city-rallies-to-save-beloved-institution/SAN FRANCISCO - On the eve of the March 15 accreditation deadline for City College of San Francisco, a rally at City Hall brought together students and allies of the college, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 2121 and several social justice organizations under the umbrella of Save CCSF.
This year has been marked by draconian sanctions placed on City College by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) - 14 conditions that were to have been met by March 15, or risk having the college's accreditation yanked.
Students, teachers and community speakers listed the cuts that have occurred in the wake of these conditions: deep staff cuts in student counseling, wage concessions, and threats to close campuses and consolidate or end programs for at-risk, minority working class students who depend on City College to bring them into higher learning. AFT 2121 is facing even more cuts and loss of a democratic voice in the college.

Hopes that passage of the city's Proposition A parcel tax and the state's Proposition 30 in November would bring revenue into CCSF have been frustrated by the lack of transparency of the CCSF Board of Trustees and interim Chancellor Thelma Scott-Skillman, who said they intended to use any surplus revenue to fund "accreditation purposes," rather than to replace programs and stave off cuts.

(46,192 posts)this accreditation is not about academics at City. it's about a lot of financial and budget issues, which City College has moved remarkably quickly to fix and deal with, but if those moves are not enough for WASC, the City Could provide some backing to help them avoid losing accreditation. the idea of such a large college losing accreditation and not being able to provide education in such a large city is just not something that should be allowed to happen.

(78,249 posts)the more likely scenario is that another district takes over, likely one on the Peninsula (since Peralta in the East Bay is itself on probation!), followed by the usual round of union-busting and layoffs. That's when you'll start to see the quality of education decline.

(32,342 posts)I wish I could get to the Board of Trustee meetings too, but they go really late through the night. They put a hold on public comment until the end of meetings (probably on purpose) and I've heard that can sometimes start at 10 pm. Oiks!

(78,249 posts)to absolutely no one's surprise, the cuts have fallen disproportionately hard on students with disabilities, even more so than at underfunded community colleges around the state. CCSF even laid off its alternative media specialist! That leaves students who read Braille, listen to CDs, whatever, up the proverbial creek without a paddle. Oh, and it also leaves CCSF wide open to a lawsuit that it really does not need right now with ACCJC in town.
P.S. Feel free to PM me any suggestions you may have for him.

(32,342 posts)I only just started digging into the issues at play here and I'm still at junior activist level. I think he'd be well served by talking directly with the people in the Save CCSF coalition if he hasn't already. If this isn't already on their radar, I know they'd want it to be.

Here we go again --- documents and communications between the accrediting commission and CCSF dating back to 2006 do *not* contain "warnings". Why is this NON fact repeated over and over again in the SF Chron? Check the documents --- they are available to the public. The college had two issues to work on and received satisfactory progress through 2010 as far as I know 1) retirement health benefit account and 2) SLOs integrated into the community. Retirement liabilty (health benefits only) continues (that's ONE thing) and SLOs are now correctly documented .... www.ccsf.edu/slo
Reference to contracts? Hmmmm .... will be interesting to see how that turns out in the end. Meanwhile $11 million has been set aside to pay consultants and the accreditating commission. I guess the teachers have to be paid less and class offerings reduced in order to pay all those high priced consultants?
The Chron coverage has been really lopsided.
