Petition Seeks to Rename Golden Gate's Waldo Tunnel as "Robin Williams Tunnel"

Petition Seeks to Rename Golden Gate's Waldo Tunnel as "Robin Williams Tunnel"

Friday, Aug 15, 2014

A petition on Change.org is seeking to change the name of Golden Gate’s Waldo Tunnel to “Robin Williams Tunnel.”

As of Friday afternoon the petition – addressed to Assemblyman Marc Levine – had nearly 700 signatures.

"Because Robin Williams has brought a smile to my face so many times in this life! Let’s honor what he did, not how he left!" one person wrote in support of signing the petition.

Julie Wainwright, who started the petition, explained the reason behind it through a brief message on Change.org: "To remember and honor the very important citizen and world renowned entertainer, Robin Williams, for the joy he brought to the world and to bring awareness to the silent illness that eventually took his life."

I love the idea and see absolutely no downside to it.

Well, as hardly a soul remember after whom it was named, I suppose this is OK. NYC_SKP Aug 2014 #1
It's mostly been referred to as the rainbow tunnel since it was painted in 1970 Brother Buzz Aug 2014 #2

I still call National Airport by it's original name.

The tunnel's name isn't official, it's named after Waldo Point, which is named after William Waldo.

I say name the tunnel for Robin Williams and continue calling the road the Waldo grade.

Waldo point has been landlocked for decades.

How can that not bring a smile?

On a more sober note, I have a policy that suggests not taking concrete actions in response to death for at least a year. Loss of someone we love is an emotional time, and long-lasting decisions should not be made in the midst of such serious emotional state. On the face of it this is a good idea, but if so, it will still be a good idea a year from now. If it has faded and gotten lost then we will know that it was but the expression of grief.
