Related: About this forumOakland’s Uptown named 2014's best neighborhood
http://blog.sfgate.com/ontheblock/2014/10/09/oaklands-uptown-named-2014s-best-neighborhood/Looks like former Oakland Mayor Jerry Browns 10K Housing Initiative has really paid off. Oaklands Uptown neighborhood was recently named the number one great neighborhood in the country by the American Planning Association. (You can click here to see the other neighborhoods, none in California, that made the list.)...
In fact, in a recent SFGate piece, Oakland realtors named Uptown as one of the citys fastest growing neighborhoods, with young singles and even retirees rushing to the area. Brand-new condos are mixed in with homes in repurposed historic buildings (such as the unique Uptown penthouse in the gallery above) and the neighborhood can now command $1 million-plus pricing....
Of course, another major benefit to the neighborhood is its connection with the arts. It houses the Fox Theater, The Paramount Theater, the New Parkway Theater and the New Parish, plus it has signature events like the First Friday Art Gallery Walk and the First Friday festival. Theres also a wealth of public art, including a still-underway Dan Corson-created LED exhibit at the 19th Street BART exit and a sculpture garden in Art Park.
Uptown incubates the home-grown, artistic, and entrepreneurial spirit unique to Oakland, said the APA. The neighborhood has experienced significant revitalization over the last 15 years, transforming an area dominated by underutilized parking lots into the Bay Areas premier arts and entertainment district.

On a quick google search:http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/top100dangerous/
Oakland is at number 9. And pretty much every link you go to has oakland on it. So one district in the city Is the best, and others are the worst. To me this article is far more distressing than good.
