I'm collecting rain water in this drought

Last edited Fri Apr 17, 2015, 10:22 AM - Edit history (1)

Here's the formula:
1" of rain on 1,000 sq ft of surface area equals about 600 gallons.
Where I live in the San Diego area gets 10" of rain per year.
I'm not sure people realize the potential here.

I have about 500 sq ft of roof on the back half of my townhouse I have directed into a 205 gallon Bushman rain barrel.

Our last rain was 1.41 inches. I wish I had room for a bigger tank as this one filled very fast.
I applied months ago for the $75 rebate but haven't heard back...lame.

I use this water to water my garden beds and potted plants. They love it.

I really think there needs to be more resources at the California State level in helping us citizens with rain water collection.

I live in Ohio.

I live in a very rural area.

I have an 1100 gallon cistern. (That is very small) A 2400 gallon would have been my choice.

It is my only water source.

I haven't bought a truck load of water in 4 years.

I also have a septic tank instead of city sewer lines.

That eliminates 2 monthly bills.

I don't think city water and sewage is always the right choice.

City water is available in my area, but city sewage is not.

If I were a millionaire I would not tap into the city water or city sewer if available.

I think when the water wars start things will change drastically.

Catching rain water will be outlawed.

Cisterns will be outlawed.

You will be charged for the water in wells, ponds, or lakes on your own property.

A company from California tried to privatize water in Bolivia.

These were just a few of their dastardly tactics.

Thank goodness the Bolivians chased the corporation out of their country.

Seems silly, but collecting rain water is illegal in some parts of the country. If you find it's illegal, don't discuss your solution on the Internet.

We're good here.

On edit...and if you read my post you'd have read my reference to a rebate which sadly didn't come through.
