Norwalk police and FBI say man who “showed interest” in mass killing arrested, guns and body armor seized

Norwalk police and federal agents seized firearms, ammunition and titanium-plated body armor and arrested a man who had posted his interest in mass murder on Facebook, authorities said Thursday.

Brandon Wagshol, 22, was charged with four counts of illegal possession of large capacity magazines and was being held on $250,000 bail before a Superior Court appearance Friday.

The FBI’s National Threat Operations Center received a tip that Wagshol was trying to buy the banned clips from out of state, officials said. Federal and local police also found that he was buying parts for a rifle online, police said.

Wagshol had posted on Facebook that he “was into planning a mass murder," Norwalk police Lt. Terry Blake said. On Wednesday evening, he was detained outside his Bedford Avenue condominium as law enforcement officers served a “risk warrant,” which allows police to seize firearms and ammunition from a person they believe is a risk to himself or others. Such warrants — also called extreme risk protective orders, or “red flag” laws — are signed by Superior Court judges, and the person whose weapons are seized is entitled to a hearing within 14 days.
