New Haven Register evacuated after suspicious letter discovered; no hazard found

NEW HAVEN >> The New Haven Register building was evacuated for three hours Wednesday afternoon after a suspicious letter containing white powder arrived at the newspaper, but it was determined not to contain a hazardous substance.

Register Publisher Kevin Corrado said “the substance was nonhazardous.”

Two employees who were in the presence of the opened envelope remained inside the building at 100 Gando Drive while other employees waited outside. Three other employees also were evaluated for possible exposure, Fire Battalion Chief Thomas Neville said at the scene.

Firefighters responded with hazmat equipment at about 2:20 p.m. after the letter was opened.
